ABC Classic and ABC Jazz reveal recipients of $90,000 Composer Commissioning Fund

ABC Classic and ABC Jazz have announced the 15 recipients of the inaugural Composer Commissioning Fund to support the creation of new music from emerging and diverse Australian artists.
Chosen from 150 applications, all compositions will be recorded live for broadcast and commercial release via ABC Music, with each successful applicant being granted up to $6,000 to assist in the writing and recording of their work.
Out of the 15 successful composers and performers selected in the fund, more than half identify as female, with two composers identifying as First Nations, three as LBGTQIA+, and five as linguistically and culturally diverse. ....

Oakland student earns Messalonskee High’s MPA award

OAKLAND Gabriella Smart, daughter of Tim and Kerry Smart of Oakland and a senior at Messalonskee High School, has been selected to receive the 2021 Principal’s Award. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.
Throughout her four years at Messalonskee High School, Smart has distinguished herself in the classroom as a high honors with distinction student, student of the month, and a member of the National Honor Society, according to a news release. Her leadership roles have included being a member of Student Council as a representative for her class as well as class president her sophomore and junior years. This year she has been one of two student members on the school’s leadership team. ....

Shades of Blue is about finding and experiencing a connection with nature. It’s about Wara Wayinnga, a dune system that is special part of the Kaurna coastline that is still home to a plethora of native flora and fauna. Atop the system of dunes one is surrounded by various shades of blue from the ocean, sky, and Adelaide hills.
“The current climate with the pandemic and lots of isolation and staying at home has forced me, and I would say a lot of people, to seek connection with nature more than we normally would. Because connecting with nature is really good for our mental health and our physical health. So for me, this was going down to the beach and walking, experiencing the sound and sensations of nature, and quite near my home is a very special reserve - the Tennyson Dunes - Wara Wayinnga.” ....
