Retiring superintendent proud to be part of Cambria Heights | News, Sports, Jobs

Michael Strasser has served as superintendent of the Cambria Heights School
District since 2009. He will wrap up his 37-year teaching career at the end of this school year.
PATTON Michael Strasser has faced numerous challenges throughout his 37-year teaching career.
But of all the obstacles he has faced, arguably none have been more difficult than COVID-19.
Entering the final weeks of his career in public education, Strasser reflected on the stressful yet rewarding journey he has witnessed.
“To see the teachers, students and parents rise to the challenge when changes were not only occurring weekly, but daily and sometimes hourly, made me proud to be a part of Cambria Heights and this resilient community we call home,” said Strasser, who is set to retire at the end of the school year and current Director of Education Ken Kerchenske will become the district’s new superintendent. ....

Cambria Heights votes to offer $200 tax credit to firefighters | News, Sports, Jobs

PATTON Recognizing the rapid decline in the number of volunteer firefighters, the Cambria Heights School District took action Tuesday to help retain and recruit volunteers.
After a unanimous vote from school board members, the district will now be able to provide up to a $200 tax credit to eligible volunteer firefighters within the district.
“We are really excited to give back and provide some type of reward for those that put everything on the line,” Superintendent Michael Strasser said. “We hope this can help our volunteers with their recruitment and retention.”
Cambria Heights solicitor Patrick Fanelli said the potential $200 credit will be applied toward a firefighters’ earned income taxes or real estate taxes. ....

Schools get $2.2B in virus aid | News, Sports, Jobs

HARRISBURG Gov. Tom Wolf is dedicating $2.2 billion in federal stimulus funds to K-12 school districts and charter schools affected by the COVID-19 pandemic to support food programs, technological improvements and other education services.
“All schools have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and I commend school communities for rising to the challenge to combat the toll it has taken,” Wolf said. “This extra funding is critical to help schools meet the unique needs of educating students at this time while keeping school buildings safe when students return to the classroom.”
The federal relief is provided by the bipartisan Coronavirus Response and Relief Congress passed the Supplemental Appropriations Act’s Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund in December. ....
