What happened: The district expects to complete more than $6 million in capital projects at its elementary, middle and high schools, plus its administrative offices, beginning this summer through the 2025-26 school year. Scope of project: District officials will move forward with various mechanical, HVAC and other electrical upgrades across its academic, administrative and athletic facilities, beginning in 2021-22. As of next school year, the district is set to spend an estimated $556,360 to install the following improvements: a new HVAC control system in its field house, at a cost of $517,500; variable-frequency drives, heat valves and actuators at Park Elementary School, $30,930; and variable-frequency drives at Taylor Middle School, $7,930. ....
Residents in the Creekside subdivision of Burgaw were terrified after a rabid bobcat attacked three neighbors this month. A resident was captured on a viral video fighting off the angry animal. Although the April 9 life-threatening incident is rare, local health department and law officials are still urging the public to stay vigilant of wild animals and act when needed. The bobcat scare is an example of the unexpected. Carolyn Moser, director of Pender County Health and Human Services, said it was unusual and a first for many people in the area. When it comes to rabies, it’s usually foxes and raccoons. ....

What happened: The school district has more than $8 million in its collective fund balance that can be used to cover capital projects, health care costs and minimize annual tax increases into the foreseeable future. Background: Since the 2016-17 school year, the district has experienced a $4.75 million increase in total reserves. The district entered 2020-21 with $2.1 million in general funds assigned to offset increases in pension costs and future budget deficits, $1.72 million in capital reserve funds to spend on essential capital improvements at its academic buildings, $2.82 million in health insurance funds to cover employee health care expenses, and an additional $2.2 million in unassigned funds. These figures do not include federal aid from Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief grants received during the current school year. ....
