Members of Howard Payne University’s faculty and staff were recognized for their service during the 2020-2021 year at an annual personnel luncheon held on campus. Dr. Dennis Gibson, associate professor of chemistry and department chair, received the Outstanding Faculty Member Award. Hunter Sims, athletic director, received the Outstanding Staff Member Award. The outstanding faculty and staff awards are made possible by Underwood’s Cafeteria and Porter Insurance Agency, respectively. ....

Twenty-two years ago, one of scientists’ first attempts at gene therapy ended in tragedy when a young man died. The story of Jesse Gelsinger, who had a rare liver disorder, became a textbook example of irresponsible medical research. For years, the case hobbled efforts to treat diseases by adding new DNA to a sick person’s cells. Now, a fresh effort to cure Gelsinger’s disease is bearing fruit, in the latest sign of the field’s resurgence. ....

Clifton man arrested on multiple sex crimes

Clifton resident Gary Harding, 73, is accused of multiple counts of sexual assault on a child and received a $50,000 cash-only bond from Mesa County Court on Monday.
The charges stem from alleged incidents that occurred between Aug. 1, 2009, and Nov. 13, 2020, involving two separate juveniles, the Mesa County Sheriffâs Office reports.
Harding faces nine counts of sexual assault on a child, pattern of abuse and three counts of sexual assault on a child, position of trust, both class 3 felonies, and Jessicaâs Law (a indeterminate sentence enhancer for child sex crimes).
A minor told her mother last month that Harding had been molesting her for the past two years, according to the arrest affidavit. Similar accusations were made by one of her cousins. ....
