Parents report teens' mental health worsening amid COVID

Nearly half of parents report their teenagers facing new or worsening mental health conditions since the pandemic began, a new poll has found. Restrictions to control COVID have kept teens at home “at the age they were primed to seek independence from their families,” said study co-director Dr. Gary Freed, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Michigan. The pandemic has severely disrupted their lives, Freed said, pointing to the cancellation of school activities and the inability to hang out with friends due to social distancing. Not surprisingly, many teens are feeling “frustrated, anxious and disconnected” as a result. Three in four parents surveyed said COVID has negatively impacted their teens’ ability to socialize with their friends. Teen girls are suffering more. 31% of teen girls experienced depression, compared to 18% of teen boys, while 36% of teen girls faced anxiety versus 19% of teen boys. ....

Poll: Pandemic turns world of kids, teens 'upside down'

Overuse of social media and screen time, internet safety, unhealthy eating, depression and suicide, lack of physical activity. Those are among parentsâ greatest worries about their kids during the coronavirus pandemic era, according to a newly released poll from C.S. Mott Childrenâs Hospital, affiliated with the University of Michigan Medical School.
Parenting in a pandemic is not for the faint of heart, the survey concluded.
âThis is an especially challenging time for families, with many children experiencing significant changes in routine that may negatively impact their health and well-being,â said Dr. Gary Freed, a pediatrician and co-director of the poll at the university in Ann Arbor. ....

That says a lot about how overwhelmed parents feel, and how little they trust that all the technologies in their children s lives are supporting their well-being, Dr. Jenny Radesky, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Michigan Medicine told CNN. She wasn t involved in the study.
Other concerns include a lack of physical activity, an increase in unhealthy eating, racism, depression and risk of suicide. The poll included more than 2,000 parents of children ages 0 to 18.
Other worries include their children s stress and anxiety levels, and their smoking, vaping, drinking or drug activities.
Parents biggest concerns for young people seem to be associated with changes in lifestyle as a result of the pandemic, study author Dr. Gary Freed, co-director of the Mott National Poll on Children s Health, said in a statement. ....
