BOZEMAN â UPDATE: 5/14/2021 - 4:30 PM - MSU has released the following statement from Clayton Christian, Commissioner of Higher Education:
While this past year has been a challenge for the Montana University System (MUS) in many ways, it has been a success in many more. A key driver of our success has been the ability to respond, plan, and act in a coordinated manner. Nothing embodies our coordination better than the Healthy MUS Task Force and the COVID-19 Planning Guidelines its members developed and updated over the past 12 months. There is no doubt that the Healthy MUS Guidelines gave the entire MUS a clear roadmap for success this past Academic Year.

Republican Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte has signed into law a policy that county officials say prevents them from enforcing emergency public health restrictions, like mask mandates.
The law prohibits local governments from making businesses follow mandates that prevent them from offering goods or services to a customer. It also curbs local governments’ authority to issue fines for not following health orders.
State Republican lawmakers in the recently-adjourned legislative session prioritized policies limiting the power of local health officials, arguing restrictions intended to slow the coronavirus’ spread place an undue burden on residents.
The Gallatin City-County Board of Health decided against extending the county mask mandate and public gathering restrictions due to the new law. Health Officer Matt Kelley said it’s causing widespread confusion.

The Belgrade City Council is poised to pass a resolution making it clear that it will comply with new state law related to emergency health regulations so that Belgrade is not penalized financially when receiving future federal appropriations.
Such a resolution would send âa message that weâll comply with the directives of the state and not necessarily those of the local health board,â City Manager Ted Barkley said during this Mondayâs council meeting.
By doing so, he explained, the city will not be penalized under a provision in the clause in House Bill 632, which stipulates that federal appropriations for municipalities adopting health restrictions more stringent than those in effect at the state level to be cut by 20 percent.
