UPDATE 8.15AM: Police are investigating a serious crash near Calen which left a woman with life-threatening injuries. About 2am Sunday, a Toyota Landcruiser travelling on the Bruce Highway near the intersection with McDermotts Road failed to navigate a bend and travelled off the roadway. The vehicle struck the driveway of a property before rolling. The 28-year-old female driver and sole occupant of the vehicle received life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash. She was flown to the Townsville Hospital for treatment where she remains in a critical, but stable condition. The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the incident.
A small community is refusing to let the toilet at its beloved park be demolished by serving the Mackay council with a petition.
Mount Charlton residents first learned of plans to remove the Windyloo toilet facilities at Boulder Creek Park in an email from Mackay Regional Council on April 14.
The letter stated the toilet was in “very poor physical condition” and was at risk of becoming airborne in high winds because of cracks to the fibreglass roof and failed structure mountings to the foundation slab.
There were also concerns about the elevated water tank’s “badly corroded” platform and deteriorated timber framing.

A $10,000 grant will soon supply cooler temperatures for a Calen community hub.
Dawson MP George Christensen said members of the Calen and District War Memorial were successful in their bid for $10,405 to install two air conditioners.
“Of course the airconditioning units will not be installed before Sunday; it’s likely to take a month or so, but at least the people of Calen know that it will be the last time they battle the heat of the hall,” Mr Christensen said.
“In recent years, there has been an incident of a cadet collapsing due to the heat.
“I understand that the hall is used by the RSL and the local school, and other recreation and craft groups will be interested in using it once cooling is installed.”
