Judge lowers bond for former CPD officer in death of Andre Hill

Adam Coy, a former Columbus police officer accused of murder in the shooting death of Andre Hill, was released Tuesday afternoon from the Franklin County jail, hours after a judge lowered his bond from $3 million to $1 million in a court hearing.
Coy, 44, walked out of the Front Street entrance to the Downtown jail about 2:30 p.m. A small group of protesters chanted, Convict that killer cop as three men provided protection for Coy and escorted him to a waiting SUV parked at the curb.
About three hours earlier, Common Pleas Judge Stephen L. McIntosh granted a motion for reconsideration filed by Coy s attorneys, who argued that Coy s original bond, set Friday at his arraignment, was excessive. ....

The former Columbus, Ohio, police officer who was charged with murder this week in the fatal shooting of Andre Hill pleaded not guilty Friday, with a judge setting bond at $3 million.
Franklin County Court records show that Adam Coy, who was fired by the local police department in December, pleaded not guilty to one count each of murder and felonious assault, along with two counts of dereliction of duty, which are second-degree misdemeanors.
NPR reported that during Friday’s arraignment, at which Coy appeared virtually via video chat, prosecutors on behalf of Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost’s (R) office requested a high bond. However, Coy’s lawyers attempted to argue the former police officer was neither a flight risk nor a threat to public safety.  ....

Coy was arrested and indicted by a grand jury Wednesday on two counts of dereliction of duty, which are second-degree misdemeanors, and one count each of felonious assault and murder. If convicted, the charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.
With Coy appearing virtually via video feed, a Franklin County Court of Common Pleas judge accepted Coy s not-guilty plea and barred him from contacting witnesses or other police officers. She also added a $20,000 recognizance bond.
At Friday s arraignment, lawyers for the Ohio Attorney General asked for a high bond, even as Coy s lawyers argued he was neither a flight risk nor a threat to public safety, since the incident was an on-duty use of force. The judge sided with the state on that matter. ....
