Six young men will be first group mentored by Mariano Rivera Foundation


Hall of Fame pitcher Mariano Rivera spent 19 seasons with the New York Yankees making opposing batters chase balls in and around the strike zone. Now he’s helping youth right here in Gainesville chase their dreams.
Rivera was at the Ignite Life Center, 404 NW 14th Ave., in Gainesville Wednesday to announce his foundation’s new Youth Mentorship Program. 
“This is our future. If we don’t invest in our future, then who will?” Rivera said, motioning to the group of six young men that will make up the program’s inaugural class. “I believe in these youngsters. I believe they are capable of doing something special. I want them to be seen as the future of Gainesville.” ....

Boy, 3, dies after truck crash in northeast Gainesville


A toddler who was hit by a truck in northeast Gainesville Wednesday evening when he was crossing a street on a scooter has died, police reported Thursday afternoon in a news release.
The incident happened about 6:12 p.m. in the 4100 block of Northeast 15th Street when a 3-year-old scooted into the path of a southbound truck, GPD reported.
Alachua County sheriff’s deputies were first on the scene and began CPR until GPD officers and city and county rescue agencies arrived.
The toddler was taken to UF Shands Hospital and later died.
No arrests have been made. The truck driver is known to police, who continue to investigate. ....
