Melbourne Victory ready to crash W-League title party

Victory all but secured their place in finals football for a third straight season on Thursday night; downing Western Sydney Wanderers 1-0 thanks to a 43rd-minute tap-in from New Zealand International Annalie Longo following a Kyra Cooney-Cross free-kick and Melina Ayres knockdown.
Already sitting on a knife-edge, the result dealt a hammer blow to the Wanderers’ faint hopes of playing finals: Dean Heffernan’s side now six points adrift of the playoffs with just two games remaining on their ledger.
Conversely, the three points earned at AAMI Park, which hosted the fixture behind-closed-doors after a last-minute switch from Lakeside Stadium, means that Victory now sit third on the W-League table and five points clear of fifth-placed Canberra United with three games remaining.

Victory snatched the lead in Morwell when Ayres drove a cracking strike into the top corner in the 13th minute, then doubled their lead via New Zealand international Claudia Bunge's 41st-minute header.
Then, in the 42nd minute, Catherine Zimmerman slipped a clever ball through to Kyra Cooney-Cross, who drilled a low finish past Jets custodian Nicole Simonsen.
Jets star Tara Andrews pulled a goal back in the 48th minute, lashing home after Victory defender Kayla Morrison failed to clear an aerial ball.
Newcastle snared another in the 76th when Tessa Tamplin put a ball over the top for Rhianna Pollicina, who casually chipped Victory goalkeeper Gaby Garton.

De Vanna scores solo stunner as Melbourne Victory smash City for six

The 36-year-old set up one goal, had a hand in another and scored a sensational solo effort as Victory demolished the W-League champions at CB Smith Reserve in Fawkner on Sunday.
The thrashing is the first time City have conceded six goals in the W-League and is easily the heaviest defeat in the club's history, eclipsing a 4-1 loss to Perth in 2017.
Playing in 30-plus temperatures, De Vanna was at the heart of everything for Victory as they posted their first win of the 2021 campaign.
The striker set up Annalie Longo's opener in the 16th minute before having a hand in the build-up to Melina Ayres' goal later in the half.

Kyra Cooney-Cross: Australia's 'hungry' teen sensation set for breakthrough season

At the forefront of that exciting next generation is Kyra Cooney-Cross.
Part of the Melbourne Victory team crowned W-League Premiers in 2018-19, Cooney-Cross moved to Western Sydney Wanderers last year for a chance to be a regular starter.
What followed was a campaign that showed exactly what all the hype is about. With four goals and three assists from 13 games, she returns to the Victory this season poised for a true breakthrough year.
“I think she's definitely matured as a player,” Leah Blayney, head coach of the Matildas’ Under-20s, tells
Goal .
A goal-scoring phenomenon at youth level for Australia, Cooney-Cross went to the 2019 Women’s World Cup with the senior team as a training player.
