A conversation with Patricia Smith
Smith will be one of the featured poets at the 2021 Kalamazoo Poetry Festival on April 17. This year’s festival, which will be entirely online, has the theme of “From the Wreckage.”

“My last book,
Incendiary Art, everyone told me beforehand, was a little bit too rough and there weren’t any moments of light in it,” Smith says. “I think we allow ourselves too many moments of light. I wanted to write a book that did not allow people to turn away from it. There are a lot of names in the book that people didn’t recognize. For instance, if I say Trevon Martin or Michael Brown, you recognize those names. But I wanted people to know that these types of things are happening in the American African community like a drumbeat. Because there isn’t video, that doesn’t mean it’s not there.” ....

Arts events are slowly beginning to bloom, both IRL and online. While it may be April Fools Day, these five offerings are seriously worth a look. We may not be where we d like to be with in-person events yet, but let s hear it for the artists and venues who have met the Zoom challenge with innovation, thoughtfulness, and lots of heart. As our college town grows nearer to the end of the spring semester, give a little extra love to all of the arts students who managed to create magic in the midst of mayhem.

Carter Sickels is the author of the novel The Prettiest Star, published by Hub City Press (2020). Among other honors, The Prettiest Star has been named a Kirkus Best Book of 2020, a Finalist for the Southern Book Prize, Best LGBT Book of 2020 by O Magazine, one of the Women s National Book Association s 2020 Great Group Reads Selections, and an Indie Next Pick for April 2020. His debut novel The Evening Hour (Bloomsbury 2012), an Oregon Book Award finalist and a Lambda Literary Award finalist, was adapted into a feature film that premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. His essays and fiction have appeared in a variety of publications. He is an assistant professor of English at Eastern Kentucky University. ....
