Bell commissioners to decide on liquor election

The Bell County Commissioners Court could call for a local option liquor election during its meeting on Tuesday for Justice of the Peace Precinct 3 in Bell County — ballots that would decide the legality of alcoholic beverage sales, including mixed beverages, within the region.
If given the OK by commissioners, a Nov. 2 election would be held for Justice of the Peace Precinct 3 voters.
The precinct — which includes all of northeastern Bell County — also extends south to the Little River, up north until it hits FM 93 with the western border being sections of State Highway 317, Shallow Ford Road, South Kegley Road and Airport Trail.

Annual picnic resumes at Seaton Star Hall

James Skrabanek, 71, a lifelong SPJST member, was in charge of cooking the pork sausage links.
“We prepared them and smoked them on a barbecue pit Saturday,” he said. “We’re expecting to sell 1,000 plates. It’s a little more than usual. We’re anticipating a good crowd. People are out and about now.”
The menu also included fried chicken, potato salad, seven-day coleslaw, iced tea and dessert (cheesecake if you were lucky). Volunteers started serving at 11 a.m., with dine-in and drive-through takeout available.
Other activities included a bake sale of kolaches, cakes and pies. Under the pavilion, a polka jam featuring four different bands started at noon, with a little country and western thrown in. At 3 p.m. Bell County Sheriff Eddy Lange began auctioning off an assortment of donated items.

8,000 sign petition for alcohol sales in JP Precinct 3

A petition — that has gathered more than 8,000 signatures — was submitted to Bell County Thursday and now awaits approval by the Commissioners Court.
The petition is an effort to allow the sale of all alcoholic beverages including mixed beverages in the county’s Justice of the Peace Precinct 3. The petition was started by John Evans, a local farmer near Little River-Academy who aims to open a local distillery.
The signatures will now need to be confirmed by the county’s election department before being approved by the court in about 30 days.
“We are very pleased with the overwhelmingly positive response from the community,” Evans said. “Our citizens are excited about the opportunity to vote on this issue in November 2021 and bring the first ‘Farm to Glass’ distillery to Bell County and create economic development and job opportunities for our community.”

Belton man indicted for sexual assault

A convicted felon and repeat offender was indicted on a Belton sexual assault charge.
Angel Gonzalez, 27, of Belton is charged with the second-degree felony in con- nection to an incident that occurred Aug. 24 near Salado.
A woman told the Bell County Sheriff’s Department she met Gonzalez at the Days Inn at 201825 Interstate 35 in Salado.
The pair had not seen each other in a while and initially planned to rekindle a relationship, according to an arrest affidavit.
As they talked in the room, Gonzalez began to kiss the woman and she asked him to stop. She told deputies Gonzalez then pinned her down during the sexual assault, and that she told him “no” and “stop” multiple times.
