The 2021 Victorian WASZP Championship was contested on the waters of Corio Bay in Geelong. A new venue on the WASZP circuit, there was great anticipation with the forecast of good wind and flat water.
Saturday dawned and 22 WASZPs were ready to contest the series, mixed in with the Royal Geelong OTB fleets meant the course was slightly longer than usually raced in WASZPs, but this wasn t to matter as the anticipated westerly front hit the fleet halfway through the race. There were plenty of thrills and spills but it turned out to be an epic race with Lachie Hughes leading around the first lap only to have some tuning issues with his boat once the breeze came up. This handed the lead to crowd favourite Jack Abbott who was relishing the boathandling challenge as the breeze clocked to 25 knots. ....

The Victorian Open Masters and Youth Championships were sailed over the weekend of 27th and 28th February at Sorrento Sailing and Couta Boat Club at the southern end of Port Phillip.
The light and at times variable winds proved challenging for the strong fleet of 78 boats, sailed by skippers across the age range from 13 to 75 years plus. This was particularly so for the second race on the Sunday afternoon, when the wind swung and faded, such that even with a shortened course, only the Laser Standards and half of the Radial fleet finished within the time limit. ....

With the WASZP class absolutely determined to get a National Championship happening in 2021 and the success of the Covid Cup Slalom event fresh in the rear view mirror, Sorrento Sailing & Couta Boat Club has won the right to host the 2021 Nationals on 9th, 10th & 11th of April.
One of the spiritual homes of WASZP sailing, SSCBC hosted the first ever Australian WASZP National Championship back in 2018 which proved to be a springboard for the classes success, not just in Australia but globally. Since then over 1000 boats have been distributed worldwide and a thriving event circuit is set to take 2021 by the horns. ....

The WASZP class descended on Gippsland Lakes for the Australia Day weekend for a replacement event of what was to be the 2021 National Championships. Unfortunately due to Covid-19 outbreaks in NSW and Melbourne over the Christmas New Year period, border chaos ensued and a large chunk of our NSW and WA contingents could not cross the border into Victoria.
The WASZP Class Association of Australia led by class president Jack Felsenthal decided to proceed with an event in Paynesville on the shores of the picturesque Gippsland Lakes. 12 months ago bushfires had ravaged the area and it was great to visit and see the towns around the lakes thriving once again. ....
