The mayor and council’s battle over the city’s budget for police took a turn today with D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser now saying if we’re not careful, we are going to break the department, talking about the stress on officers and overtime as member numbers dip lower and lower. WASHINGTON (FOX 5 DC) - The D.C. Council unanimously voted on Tuesday to approve what they called a compromise package, providing $5 million for the Metropolitan Police Department to hire more police officers and put $6 million toward other wrap-around service measures and violence interruption. This is instead of authorizing $11 million that Mayor Muriel Bowser had proposed to provide for 170 new officers in addition to the 135 officers she previously asked for. ....

Survey: L.A. Teachers Say Students Are Losing Focus Amid Distance Learning

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Los Angeles Unified School District teachers overwhelmingly believe lower-than-ordinary student participation in distance learning is to blame for falling grades, according to results of a survey released this week.
The survey conducted by Educators for Excellence-Los Angeles, a teacher-led organization, and the USC Rossier School of Education found 94% of teachers surveyed said low student engagement has been a serious obstacle to effectively implementing distance learning this school year.
“My colleagues and I have done our best to serve our students during this pandemic, but our students are experiencing the largest disruption to education in generations, said Meghann Seril, a national board certified-third-grade teacher and member of Educators 4 Excellence-Los Angeles. ....

Nine months after shutting down public schools, a survey of Los Angeles public school teachers showed their overwhelmingly dim view of distance learning: low student engagement that is only getting worse, deteriorating grades and a lack of resources to help their students’ crisis circumstances.
Ninety-four percent of those surveyed said low student engagement was a barrier to remote learning. The vast majority of teachers say their students lack quiet spaces, adequate technology and high-speed internet and do not have schoolwork help from an adult.
The survey of 502 full-time teachers in L.A Unified and the charters schools within the district was commissioned by Educators for Excellence-Los Angeles, a teacher-led organization, and USC’s Rossier School of Education. It was conducted by phone and online by the Gotham Research Group, a research and consulting firm. ....
