The 16-year-old was critically injured in a July 3 accident at Adventureland Park that claimed the life of his brother Michael, 11. David Jr. is beginning to talk, still has a tracheotomy but is talking slowly, said Ryan Best, the family s attorney.
The good news for his family comes after they laid Michael to rest Saturday in a funeral at Des Moines Corinthian Baptist Church.

The family pastor said the biggest concern for David is his sight. He can t see right now, Christian Shields said. I don t know why his eyes are damaged. I don t know if it s because of the water or lack of oxygen or both.
