North Korea, one of the most isolated countries in the world, continues to insist that it has successfully grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic, with no coronavirus cases confirmed since the beginning of the pandemic.

South Korea’s parliament has banned the launching of propaganda leaflets into North Korea, drawing fierce criticism from rights activists and defiance from a prominent North Korean defector who said he would not stop sending messages to his homeland.
Defectors and other campaigners in South Korea have for decades sent anti-North Korean leaflets over the tightly guarded border, usually by balloon or in bottles on border rivers. They also send food, medicine, money, mini radios and USB sticks containing South Korean news and dramas.
Isolated North Korea has long denounced the practice and recently stepped up its condemnation of it, to the alarm of a South Korean government intent on improving ties on the divided peninsula. ....

The ban, passed by the South Korean parliament on Monday, drew criticism from rights activists. Seoul govt defends law criminalizing sending of anti-regime leaflets to the North

Seoul, Dec 15 (efe-epa).- The South Korean government on Tuesday defended parliamentary approval of a law that penalizes the sending of anti-regime leaflets and other items into North Korea, and stressed the need to prevent “provocations” by the Pyongyang regime.
The South Korean parliament approved the controversial law criminalizing the scattering of leaflets by balloon and other modes by groups of activists opposed to the dictatorship of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un late Monday.
The legislation, which has been criticized by human rights groups, establishes that anyone sending such anti-regime leaflets or other items into North Korea without the permission of the government can be sentenced to up to three years in prison or fined up to 30 million won ($27,500). ....
