Column: Big 10 not only link between Ohio, Wisconsin

Ancient American Indians in eastern North America built a variety of earthworks over many centuries and for many different purposes.
Ohio’s Adena culture, around 2,300 years ago, built conical burial mounds and small, circular earthen enclosures. The succeeding Hopewell culture built huge enclosures in a variety of shapes. And about 1,000 years ago, the Fort Ancient culture built at least two mounds in the shapes of animals – the Great Serpent Mound in Adams County and the so-called Alligator Mound, actually an Underwater Panther, in Licking County.
Both the Great Serpent and the Underwater Panther are powerful spirits of the Beneath World in the traditions of many American Indian tribes.  ....

COVID-19 a year later: Photos show how coronavirus changed our lives

10:22 pm UTC Mar. 10, 2021
As the country approaches its first year of adapting to the changes brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, we take a look at how the shutdowns and restrictions have impacted everyday life.
From remote work and school schedules to new ways to attend events and church services, COVID-19 continues to alter how we live. And some of the changes could go on long after the virus is gone.
Travel methods, destinations change
Crowded planes were no longer the norm in the last half of 2020 as travel plans were largely halted during the several months of the pandemic. Airlines also took on fewer passengers, blocking middle seats to create more space between customers. ....

Archaeology: Evidence of flint work shows early interest in Coshocton County

The Paleoindian period began when the ancestors of American Indians first arrived on this continent.
We’re not yet sure when that happened, but by 13,000 years ago a kind of flint spear point characterized by grooves running from the base toward the tip shows up across North America. They are called Clovis points, named for Clovis, New Mexico, where they were found among the bones of mammoths and showing conclusively that people lived here during the Ice Age.
More than 1,000 Clovis and related kinds of points have been documented in Ohio. The majority of those points were found in the flatlands of central Ohio, but the county with by far the largest number of such points is Coshocton County, which is tucked in among the hills and hollows of the Appalachian Plateau. ....

Biology: COVID-19 giving a real world lesson in natural selection

Biology: COVID-19 giving a real world lesson in natural selection
Steve Rissing
The virus that causes COVID-19 has accomplished something that school boards and other policy makers often refuse to do.
It has given us a vivid, real-time lesson in how biological evolution works, the rate at which it can occur, its consequences and the consequences of ignoring it.
Individuals don’t evolve; populations do. And COVID has reached quite a population size in its new host species.
Having found a new host population to infect, over 110 million people globally and counting, COVID-19 is exploiting its new host explosively.
Starlings (from Europe), Emerald Ash Borers (Asia), antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and herbicide-resistant weeds infesting corn and soybeans have done the same ever since we introduced them or otherwise altered their environment.    ....

Column: Dire wolf finally found close to home in Ohio

One of the iconic animals of the Pleistocene era, or “Ice Age,” is the dire wolf. Named in 1858, the dire or “terrible” wolf averaged about five feet long and 150 pounds, a bit larger than the modern grey wolf and a bit more robust.
It ranged through most of North America, coast to coast and Florida to the Dakotas. The famous Rancho La Brea “tar pits” in Los Angeles have produced the remains of over 4,000 individuals. Several years ago some colleagues and I attended a scientific conference at the museum there, where they had installed a new exhibit – a wall with 400 dire wolf skulls. Our hosts said it was to show individual variation. We said they were just bragging.  ....
