Scouts help to collect food (letter)

The Boy Scout and Girl Scout pledges encourage young people to be friendly and helpful.
Well, let me tell you this: On Saturday, April 17, Boy Scout Troop 281 and Cub Scout Pack 181 from Ironville were not only friendly and helpful, but also kind, generous and decidedly enthusiastic as they and their leaders collected and delivered to the Columbia Food Bank almost 600 pounds of much-needed (and appreciated) food supplies.
Thatâs over a quarter-ton of food! They not only collected and delivered this vast amount of food, but then carried it all up to our second-floor storage area.
Our mission at the food bank is that âno one should know hunger,â and as one young man handed me a box of cereal that was almost bigger than he was, he instructed me, âHere, help someone!â ....

St. Paul's Episcopal Church faces expensive fixes | Food + Living

Time has taken its toll on St. Paulâs Episcopal Church.
Built in 1885, the historical church building at 340 Locust St., Columbia, has weathered rain, snow and wind for over a century. Faced with a growing list of repairs and a lack of funds, the church is struggling to keep its doors open.
âThe most urgent structural repair needing to be done is the roof,â says the Rev. Patrick Peters, priest at St. Paulâs.
If something isnât done soon, he says, the building will need to be vacated due to safety concerns. He knows the roof protects the structure of the building and church artifacts as well as those who gather for worship. St. Paulâs leaking roof affects the interior as well as exterior of the building. ....
