One of the 14 sunflower fields planted by the Missouri Department of Conservation is fully in bloom. The flowers were originally planted to attract mourning doves for the September hunting season but have become popular with visitors.
The sunflowers are back in bloom at Columbia Bottom Conservation Area.
This summer, people from all over the area can travel to north St. Louis County to snag a selfie with a sunflower. The fields, planted by the Missouri Department of Conservation, are prime for public viewing and photo-taking from mid-July to mid-August.
But the sunflowers are more than a perfect summer photo backdrop, said MDC wildlife management biologist Luke Wehmhoff. ....

Manufacturers who depend on rubber for their product typically source the rubber from Asia, where most of the world’s natural rubber is harvested. But an 8-year-old St. Louis company wants to change that.
“The world’s supply of natural rubber is at risk,” said David Woodburn, the CEO of Edison Agrosciences. “Ninety percent of it or so comes from Southeast Asia … not only from the same plant species, but really, clones of [the] exact same trees. So once you have that type of concentration, pests whether it be disease or insects if they take hold, things can move fast.” ....

Homicide investigation near Columbia Bottom Conservation area

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. A homicide investigation is underway after a man was found dead inside a parked vehicle in north St. Louis County Friday afternoon.
According to the St. Louis County Police Department, officers from the North County Precinct responded to the 12600 block of Columbia Bottom Road, which is near the Columbia Bottom Conservation area, around 2:10 p.m.
On Saturday, police identified the man as 18-year-old Tyrique Hickman of Florissant.
