Masks not required in Boone County, MU buildings starting June 1


If you ve gotten vaccinated, starting in June, experiences around Columbia and Boone County will start to feel a lot closer to the normal the city, county and country as a whole have been craving since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.
The City of Columbia on Thursday announced several changes regarding masking and social distancing requirements around the city and county, including in K-12 schools, local colleges and government spaces.
As community partners, we continue to recommend wearing masks and social distancing, especially for people who are not vaccinated. As we continue to lift restrictions, now is the time to provide updated guidance to our community, said Columbia Mayor Brian Treece in a news release announcing the changes. With more people receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, it will become safer for everyone to begin enjoying activities like school and community engagement in a more normal way. ....

Starting Wednesday, businesses in Columbia will be able to set their own guidelines on masks and social distancing. 
Boone County Health Director Stephanie Browning and Columbia Mayor Brian Treece announced last week that the city would not extend the current health order after it expires at 11:59 a.m. on May 12. This is due to declining COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations. 
The Columbia/Boone County Health Department said it will give recommendations rather than orders. 
“Wearing masks, social distancing, and avoiding mass gatherings are still the best ways to keep our loved ones safe, Browning said at the briefing last week. We ll keep working on education and vaccination. ....

Columbia businesses prepare differently for expiring health order


COLUMBIA - Starting Wednesday, businesses in Columbia will be able to set their own restrictions regarding masks and social distancing. 
Health orders will expire May 12 at 11:59 a.m. KOMU 8 talked to nine businesses on what their next steps are.

Columbia Mayor Brian Treece announced no new health order will be put in place after the current one expires on May 12.
Masks will still be required in city buildings. Individual businesses and schools have the ability to require masks.
Both the University of Missouri and Columbia Public Schools are no longer requiring masks outdoors. 
All seven Missouri Veterans Homes were shutdown in March of 2020, and new veteran admissions were stopped in all homes that had positive COVID-19 cases.
The response to the pandemic in the homes resulted in an external review conducted by St. Louis law firm Armstrong Teasdale in October of 2020. The review found that the Missouri Veterans Commission failed to both acknowledge and react promptly to COVID-19 outbreaks within the long-term care facilities. ....
