One day when Oliver Nguyen-Lopez was about six months old, he stopped breathing. His frantic parents administered CPR until the ambulance arrived.
The medical emergency was caused by an allergic reaction to the whooping cough vaccination, which most babies tolerate. He stopped breathing on three more Bruoccasions during the next six weeks, pulling through because of his parents’ quick action and hospital care.
“I didn’t emerge unscathed,” he says. “Because of that lack of oxygen to my brain I learned new things slower and with more difficulty compared to my old self and others.“
In school he compensated by focusing intensely on tasks and working extra hard. New tasks took longer to learn, but he challenged himself and never made excuses, he said. ....

Pine Creek senior receives scholarship from international women's nonprofit

Ask around about Lindsay Baker, and the word you’ll hear most often is “focused.”
“She is really focused and hardworking,” said Rita Baker, Lindsay’s mother. “She gives everything her all. It’s just amazing.”
“She is a very impressive, talented and focused young lady,” said Candace Gordon, president of the Colorado Springs chapter of the Philanthropic Educational Organization. “She knows where she wants to go and what she needs to do to get there.”
Baker’s sense of focus is one of the qualities that impressed the P.E.O. Sisterhood, an organization dedicated to expanding women’s opportunities through education. The nonprofit recently awarded the Pine Creek High School senior with a $2,500 college scholarship, according to a recent news release. ....
