In doing some research for my appearance on Forrest Whitman’s On The Rail’s podcast on KHEN 106.9 FM radio in Salida, Colorado, I realized that I first started seriously writing about passenger rail service into the Colorado mountains back in the mid-aughts but that my true connection to trains, mountains, skiing and water runs much deeper.
I’ll dive into all of the history in a moment, but first some breaking news on the Tennessee Pass Line lease exemption filing by Colorado Midland Pacific Railroad. In a letter to the U.S. Surface Transportation Board (STB) on Monday, March 15, a Washington, D.C. attorney wrote that “erroneous” opposition to the passenger proposal based on speculation about crude oil transport had prompted an amendment request. ....

Commissioners meet with railroad


Sara Cassidy, community liaison with Colorado Midland & Pacific Railroad, met virtually with Chaffee County during the commissioner’s work session Monday.
The railroad, a subsidiary of Rio Grande Pacific Corporation, recently leased the Tennessee Pass line from the Union Pacific Railroad.  
Cassidy said the railroad is meeting with communities to discuss the option of setting up a commuter and local freight line. 
“We want to listen and learn from these communities,” Cassidy said. “If the need and desire is there for a commuter passenger rail line, we are looking to pursue public and private partnerships to serve these communities.”
Cassidy reiterated that the railroad plans only to explore commuter and local freight traffic, not crude oil.  ....

Commissioners to meet with railroad liaison


The meeting with Cassidy is scheduled for 2:15 p.m.
Commissioners will receive an update from Resource Based International, representing Pueblo West, about the Hill Ranch revegetation project, scheduled for 1:15 p.m.
Jamie Billesbach, Central Mountain Small Business Development Center director, will talk to the commissioners at 1:45 p.m. about the Resilient Entrepreneurial Ecosystems CO Creation Plan. 
From 9 to 11:45 a.m. commissioners are scheduled to hear reports from department heads.
Tuesday
During their regular meeting at 9 a.m. Tuesday, commissioners will resume discussion of three continued items:
• Shaw Ranch major subdivision sketch plan, continued from Jan. 19, subdividing 74.3 acres into eight lots sized from 2.4 to 36.6 acres.  ....
