Colchester Council elections: The Tory, Green, Lib Dem and Labour manifestos

The Conservative Group is hoping to take control of the council from the coalition.
To do so the group need to secure an additional five seats.
The Tories have set out ten immediate pledges which they are promising to enact if the win control of the council.
The first is to attempt to stop Alumno’s proposed students flats development off Queen Street and find an alternative plan for the area.
Any plans to build on Shrub End sports grounds would be stopped.
The group will commit £50,000 to explore “alternative options” for Middlewick, where 1,000 homes are set to be built. ....

Campaigners hit out at council's tree planting in Lexden


A CAMPAIGNER says a council is going ahead with the planting of trees at an area of parkland without properly consulting residents.
Gary Knight, who set up a website to make people aware of plans to plant thousands of trees at Spring Lane Park, Lexden, believes residents have not been properly consulted on the proposals and the plans are not appropriate for the area.
Colchester Council plans to plant thousands of new trees at the park as part of its Colchester Woodland and Biodiversity Project.
Mr Knight described the council’s approach as a “brutalist’s guide to tree planting and environmental enhancement”. ....

THOUSANDS of trees will be planted at green spaces across Colchester next year as part of the council s plans to tackle the climate emergency.
Colchester Council is set to plant about 10,000 trees in 2021, with ten public planting events scheduled to take place in January and February.
The authority has also widened the remit of its Colchester Woodland and Biodiversity Project, which will restart in January.
This means as well as tree planting, with 200,000 set to be planted in the borough over the next few years, it now also focuses on wilding green spaces.
The project has seen the grass-cutting regime changed in areas such as Castle Park in a bid to help wildflowers grow, whilst Glyphosate based weedkillers have been phased out of use by council staff. ....
