Young people have fallen behind on vaccinations during the pandemic, experts say. Can the COVID-19 vaccine help change that?


The pending availability of a second COVID-19 vaccine for 12- to 17-year-olds has local infectious diseases experts hopeful it will spur young people to catch up on all vaccinations.
Moderna said Tuesday that the first dose of its vaccine was 93% effective in that age range following a study on more than 3,700 young people. The drug maker said it saw no COVID-19 diagnoses in study participants who got two doses.
The company plans to submit its data in early June to the Food and Drug Administration for the same emergency-use authorization given to the Pfizer vaccine.
Our vaccination sites continue to see higher volumes of younger individuals ages 12 to 15 since the Pfizer vaccine was authorized for emergency use, Dr. David Priest, an infectious diseases expert with Novant Health said Tuesday. ....

GREENSBORO, N.C. Free tickets, discounts and even gift cards those are just some of the incentives COVID-19 vaccine providers are offering for people to get their shots.
Fans at Tuesday s Winston-Salem Dash game will get a discount ticket if they get their vaccine at a pop up clinic in the stadium.
The clinic is run by Forsyth County Department of Public Health and it s the county s second pop up event that offers rewards for getting the vaccine. ....

The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention s recent decision clearing the way for 12-15-year-olds to get vaccinated for COVID-19 has helped boost interest in the shot in Forsyth County. 
Vaccine supply still far exceeds demand in the county – that’s why the health department decided to shut down its mass vaccination site. But Public Health Director Joshua Swift says he’s encouraged by the numbers he saw at events last week, with teens making up about two-thirds of the attendees.  ....

In NC, it's been nearly a year since new COVID-19 cases were lower than they were Sunday


Dr. Christopher Ohl, an infectious disease expert with Wake Forest Baptist Health, said Friday he’s concerned that CDC s latest guidance may be misinterpreted by the unvaccinated that the pandemic is over even he agrees that those fully vaccinated should be allowed more social activities.
North Carolinians are seeing another potential sign that the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic might have passed.
The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services reported Monday that the state had 688 new cases on Sunday, along with 1,066 reported on Friday and 864 on Saturday.
Sunday s daily case count is the lowest since 431 on Aug. 17, which reflected a data-gathering glitch at the time. Before that, North Carolina had not seen a lower number of new cases since June 9, when 676 were reported. ....
