ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Long-time angel investor and serial entrepreneur John Chavez had an unenviable front-row seat during the economic devastation wrought by the Great Recession in 2008.

At that time, New Mexico’s incipient startup ecosystem had limited resources to support many struggling businesses that had recently launched prior to the crisis, and investors like Chavez could do little as numerous startups crashed and burned in the downturn.
Now, 13 years later, it’s a very different story as the state and country emerge from the pandemic, which plunged the economy into a far-worse crisis than the one a decade ago. This time, the local ecosystem was well-prepared to weather the storm, armed with a ....

Startup scene looks poised for robust return

......................
Once statewide vaccinations got underway, people started trickling back in. As of late June, about 50 people were renting space again.
And now, with the state’s full economic reopening on July 1, FatPipe is set for a new surge in activity.
“Things are definitely picking up,” Adkins said. “Things are really flowing again.”
Like FatPipe, New Mexico’s myriad entrepreneurial programs, startup accelerators, newly launched businesses and networking forums are all preparing for a robust return to in-person activities. And most of the community’s movers and shakers expect the startup ecosystem to come back even stronger than before, buoyed by a virtual world of interaction that kept the bustling, pre-COVID startup landscape alive and vibrant, even during the pandemic. ....

UNM’s Innovation Academy creates searchable database of Lobo entrepreneurs
April 07, 2021
If there is one thing everyone has learned over the last 12 months, it’s that we have to take care of each other. The UNM Innovation Academy thinks that means supporting our fellow Lobos who are small business owners and entrepreneurs.
To that end, the Innovation Academy has begun collecting information from UNM-affiliated business owners in hopes of creating a searchable database of Lobo entrepreneurs. The goal is to provide a space for consumers to find what they need and support a small local business at the same time. ....

Rainforest Virtual Pitch Competition winners announced

Despite a lack of in-person courses and the “normal” level of social interaction, New Mexico college and university students showed up (virtually, of course) in force for the Spring 2021 Rainforest Pitch Competition. Once again, students were only given one chance to submit a 90-second pitch to be judged by industry leaders. The virtual competition doesn’t have more than one round like the in-person version, so that means no do-overs. The judges’ choices are in and 10 students were awarded their share of the $4,750 prize pool.
We are incredibly excited about all the contestants in this semester s pitch competition, it seems like they get better and better each semester, and it was incredibly difficult for the judges to pare down the winners,” said Rob DelCampo, executive director of the UNM Innovation Academy. “With such a great set of ideas, we are incredibly excited to get back to an in-person model to help them on their entrepreneurial journey and all be tog ....
