GULF BREEZE Fort Barrancas Area was accepted into the National Park Service’s National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom on April 23.
Located on Naval Air Station Pensacola, the 64.06-acre Fort Barrancas Area is managed by Gulf Islands National Seashore.
The National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom is a federal program that commemorates the stories of the men and women who risked everything for freedom and those who helped them. It honors, preserves, and promotes the history of resistance to enslavement through escape and flight worldwide. ....

Highway 399 to reopen nearly 5 months after Hurricane Sally closed it


The National Parks Service confirmed the reopening in a news release Thursday afternoon, saying temporary repairs to the road are sufficiently complete to safely reopen the road. A project to make permanent repairs will get underway later this year.
Also on Friday morning, the Opal Beach day use loop D pavilions, restrooms and parking lot will reopen to visitors.
Highway 399, also called J. Earle Bowden Way, will only open to passenger cars and emergency vehicles that are able to use the road. Commercial vehicles and oversized vehicles, including RVs, trailers of any kind, buses and delivery trucks will not be allowed to use the road until permanent repairs are in place. ....
