Fort Payne wishlist greater than its checkbook


The Fort Payne City Council held a brief meeting on Tuesday with a public hearing to receive public comments on a proposed re-zoning of property followed by a long work session touching on several frequent topics.
The Council gave second reading to and approved an ordinance establishing a speed limit on Echols Drive. They discussed installing windows from Kudzu Millworks on the front of the small building where Fort Payne Main Street is re-locating to make it more energy efficient and will revisit the issue with price estimates. Council Member Phillip Smith said the airport committee reported that the complete repaving of the tarmac will be put off until August due to heavy traffic relating to flyers dropping their children off at the Mentone summer camps. ....

FORT PAYNE, Ala. (WAFF) -This week, the Fort Payne Fire Department received a new life-saving tool to help people in an emergency situation like getting trapped in a car.
When responding to a motor vehicle crash or people trapped inside, the Amkus extrication tool will help firefighters get them out quickly.
Fort Payne Training Chief Scott Westbrook said previously they would have to use a cutter, spreader and extension. ....

City approves incentives for Heil to invest in local plant


The Fort Payne City Council returned to live meetings on April 6 and approved a resolution to grant a tax abatement to Heil Co. so the company can move forward with plans to modernize locally. They also discussed the status of demolishing the old DeKalb Hospital and recognized the local Marine Toys for Tots program. At a work session the following day, they discussed a city social media policy and steps needed to recruit another new restaurant.
DeKalb Economic Development Director Jimmy Durham said Heil has been a great corporate citizen since arriving in 1973. The company now wants to invest $42.3 million and sought the abatement of $430,000 in non-educational taxes. The Council passed the resolution authorizing Mayor Brian Baine to enter into the agreement. ....

Little River Canyon National Preserve held a water and park safety day for local media sources on Tuesday at the Little River Falls parking lot as the park s peak season approaches.  
Little River Canyon National Preserve Public Information Officer and Park Ranger Matt Switzer said the event served as a way to help visitors make the best out of their visit and leave with good memories, rather than tragic stories. 
“We specifically wanted to address water safety here,” he said. “Last year, we had a very busy year, unfortunately, we also had a lot of search and rescue events, much more than we had in the past years.”  ....
