New stamp depicts St. Augustine's historic Castillo de San Marcos

The Castillo was built by the Spanish to defend Florida and the Atlantic trade route, and is the oldest masonry fortress in the United States, according to the National Park Service. It is also one of only two fortifications in the world built out of coquina, a limestone naturally formed as ancient seashells bond together underwater. The other is Fort Matanzas National Monument just 14 miles away.
Steven Roberts, the NPS chief of interpretation and education for both the Castillo and Fort Matanzas, said the U.S. Postal Service approached him and fellow staff about two years ago with the idea of featuring the centuries-old Castillo de San Marcos in a commemorative stamp. ....
