You might think that someone who loves nature would rather be outside than inside, bent over a book. You’d be right, with one notable exception: the members of the Nature Lovers’ Book Club, based out of the White Salmon Valley Community Library in White Salmon. Members meet via Zoom (for now) at 4 p.m. on the first Friday of every month. ....

Letter to the editor: Library Scrooges raise property tax revenues for 2021 even with huge surplus?

My comment is based on their 2020 budget as reflected in Novemberâs meeting.
The day before Decemberâs meeting it appears they hastily amended the budget on their website to remove or hide over $4,000,000 in revenue coming from reserves and reimbursements, so now, rather than show an excess of revenues at year end in the $6,000,000 range and not increase tax revenues or heaven forbid lower them, they feel justified in increasing tax revenues. In their haste to move numbers around the amended 2020 budget on their website showed 24 calculation errors (to which the library board had no comment). Due to their creative accounting, property taxes now fund 93 percent of the budget as opposed to only 80 percent prior to removing these revenues, many of which were discretionary. ....

I just read Janet Easley’s letter imploring everyone to “Question Authority!” because she claims the library system is not free and open during the pandemic (“Keep libraries open,” Our Readers’ Views, Dec. 9). She alleges unnamed “authorities” are keeping the Fort Vancouver Regional Library system closed because it is not essential, wasting our tax monies.
I suggest we question Janet Easley, and all those who shout misinformed, unsupported complaints in the name of patriotic platitudes. The truth is, the treasures of the library have remained freely accessible throughout the pandemic. I use the catalog to place books on hold, listen to downloaded audiobooks and music, watch movies, and read e-books, magazines and newspapers. ....
