Protests in Chicago: Black, Brown unity still a goal since George Floyd

A week after George Floyd was killed by police in Minneapolis, a large crowd of mostly Latinos gathered under the arch leading to Little Village’s bustling 26th Street.
People knelt during a moment of silence for Floyd. The smell of sage swept through the crowd as part of an indigenous ritual.
Some people waved signs stating “Black Lives Matter” while others held posters proclaiming solidarity between Latino and Black communities.
The gathering reignited a rallying cry for Black and Brown unity after video depicting Floyd’s death led to a racial reckoning across the country. In Chicago, shifting racial demographics, longstanding segregation and differing views on the role of police have put that goal to the test. ....

'Justice was served': State, local officials and Chicagoans react to Derek Chauvin's murder conviction

Watching the verdict of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who was found guilty on all charges for last May’s murder of George Floyd, brought Mark Clements, a survivor of police violence, back to 2010.
“You’re looking at a Chicago Police torture survivor myself, who spent over 28 years of life hemmed up inside a prison, where no one cared . to watch a verdict come back, I was just as happy watching that verdict as I was watching when Jon Burge was found guilty for lying about police torture in the city of Chicago,” Clements told a crowd of about 30 who had gathered in Daley Plaza Tuesday evening shortly after Chauvin’s verdict was announced. ....
