The newly elected chair of the Ministerial Council of the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM), Hon. Saboto S. Caesar, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Transformation, Forestry and Fisheries of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, has urged fellow ministers responsible for Fisheries across the Caribbean to prioritize the Blue Economy as the region seeks to strengthen COVID-19 recovery efforts.
The ‘Blue Economy’ is an emerging concept that encourages better use and conservation of the ocean or ‘blue’ resources to boost economic growth and to tackle unemployment, food security and poverty.
The Ministerial Council has been forced to meet virtually since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, but that has not stopped them from making monumental progress in steering the fisheries and aquaculture sector forward, with carefully designed policies and plans, despite very challenging ....

More Must Be Done to Close Digital Divide, End Poverty, Speakers Say, as Social Development Commission Continues Debate
The Commission for Social Development resumed its general discussion in virtual format today, with representatives of Member States emphasizing the growing importance of digital technology in the global quest to overcome poverty, achieve sustainable development and build better lives for all.
Many speakers noted how digital technology has made it possible to overcome some of the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, but several also stressed the importance of doing more to close the digital divide - particularly in remote and rural areas, and among women, youth, the elderly and disabled persons - in this Decade of Action to deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals. ....

World Social Justice Day to be marked on Feb 20

ISLAMABAD: Like other parts of the globe, United Nations (UN) World Day of Social Justice will be marked on February 20 (Saturday) to encourage people to look at how social justice affects poverty eradication.
It also focuses on the goal of achieving full employment and support for social integration.
The World Summit for Social Development, which promoted social justice, was held in Copenhagen (pictured above) in 1995. Many organizations, including the UN and the International Labour Office, make statements on the importance of social justice for people.
Many organizations also present plans for greater social justice by tackling poverty, social and economic exclusion and unemployment. Trade unions and campaign groups are invited to call on their members and supporters to mark the day. ....
