Marvin Rouse has developed two state hurdles champions at Como Park High School. Niles Deneen was a winner in the state meet in 1994 and Aaron Larson in 1986.
The hurdles are a running discipline that takes a special talent, and Rouse always is on the lookout for a young athlete with a chance to excel.
Como Park’s track team still was working inside the gymnasium in the long spring of 2013 when Rouse took note of Trevon Clay.
“I talked to Trevon about the hurdles, and he was willing to give it a try,” Rouse said. “I showed him the three-step technique, and he picked it up right away. He was a natural.” ....

Perhaps the impacts of distance learning are not as bad as once thought.
To be clear, the numbers are not good.
A report before many students began their winter break during which they would spend most of their time in the same place they’ve been going to class, their home highlighted an increase in failing grades.
It shows across the nation the number of students with at least one failing grade has increased as much as 40%.

Walz to announce sweeping education plan amid ongoing pandemic

Monday, Gov. Tim Walz and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan unveiled a new education plan for Minnesota.
The Due North Education Plan aims to ensure every child receives a high-quality education, regardless of location and race, Walz and Flanagan said.
As a former classroom teacher for over 20 years, I ve seen firsthand how a high-quality education shapes students lives for years to come, Walz said. The Due North Education Plan guides us toward a future where every child receives a high-quality education, no matter their race or zip code.
Flanagan said the COVID-19 has exacerbated disparities in education across the state, especially along racial and geographic lines. They hope the education plan will help students recover from the learning loss students suffered during the pandemic while closing the opportunity gap. ....

A deeper dive into the demographics of St. Paul Public Schools failing grades shows wide disparities between white students and students of color.
According to secondary-school data presented to school board members last week, 48% of Asian students and 60% of Black students the district s two largest constituencies failed one or more courses in the first quarter, compared with 22% of white students.
To some in attendance, the disparities were not surprising for a district with a persistent achievement gap. School systems across the country, including Minneapolis, are seeing a rise in failing marks during a pandemic that has disrupted in-person instruction and made one-to-on ....
