Golf Manor Synagogue's Sefer Torahs: old and new | Local News


 
The year 2021 marks 120 years for Golf Manor Synagogue (GMS).  To celebrate this auspicious anniversary Golf Manor Synagogue is embarking on a Sefer Torah Campaign.  
Golf Manor Synagogue’s Sefer Torah Campaign is unlike any other.  Many congregations will commission the writing of a brand-new Torah to join their collection.  GMS is combining the writing of a new Torah with a restoration of their current Torahs.  This added dimension has practical benefits, ensuring that all the Torahs are free of any imperfection and in the best condition possible to be able to last for many more years to come.  
GMS is currently in possession of one relatively new Torah, fondly referred to as the “Zipkin” Torah, for the Zipkin family who donated it, and six older Torahs.  According to Torah restoration expert Rabbi Shmuel Shchori, GMS’s older Torahs were most definitely written before WWII.  Rabbi Yosef Alt, Rabbi of GMS, shared that e ....

In 1825 N. Longworth for one dollar added by a deed of gift fifty feet in the rear of the first lot [of the first Jewish cemetery in Cincinnati], which increased it to twenty-five by one hundred. In 1836 the congregation purchased the adjoining lot of twenty-five feet from N. Longworth, which comprises the entire lot. This ground was used for twenty-eight years until December 1849, when it was finally closed, although not quite filled.

Mr. S. N. Pike has made the sensible and pleasing decision to change his beautiful hall in this city into a still more beautiful and attractive opera-house. With characteristic energy, he commenced the work on Tuesday last a few hours after his arrival in the city, and he intends to have the alterations completed in six weeks, say by June 1.
