Can You Learn Avalanche Safety Online?

I was 23 when I started backcountry skiing. I’d been recreating in the mountains my entire life, resort skiing, backpacking, and climbing volcanoes in the Cascades. I’d taken a National Outdoor Leadership School mountaineering course, and I was writing for a ski magazine. And yet I felt completely lost about where to start. So I borrowed some gear and took an American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE) Level 1 course, which at the time seemed like the only way to begin.
AIARE’s three-day recreational Level 1 comprises 24 hours of education, usually about eight hours of classroom learning followed by two eight-hour field days, and offers a crash course in snow safety, avalanche terrain, and companion rescue. It has long been the standard entry point for backcountry beginners.  ....

The release of Teton Gravity Research’s latest movie, “Make Believe,” was unlike any that came before it, as the gold-standard producer of ski and snowboard cinema attempted to reach audiences in the COVID-19 fall and winter.
Following an autumn-long drive-in movie tour across the mountain west and beyond, which brought “Make Believe” to Buttermilk in September, TGR added the film to its new streaming app and now is using it to bring the snowsports community together at a virtual Colorado party. ....

Why We Ski | AspenTimes.com

Roger Marolt has seen nearly six decades worth of opening days in Aspen, but none of those came during a pandemic. The native Aspenite has experienced plenty of dry winters, however, and equates a drought year to that of COVID-19 because of the uncertainty.
“You just don’t know what you are going to get,” Marolt said. “It feels just like that. You hope for the best and you see what you get.”
Marolt is a member of the famed skiing family that includes Max, Aspen’s first Olympian, Bill, Mike and Steve – all accomplished skiers in their own respective ways. It’s safe to say skiing is in the Marolt bloodline, as is the love of the sport that so many in Aspen share with the world. ....

Aspen’s backcountry skiing possibilities are endless and easily accessible, which is terrific and terrible all at the same time. With the pandemic possibly limiting access to traditional ski mountains, the backcountry is expected to see a lot more traffic this winter.
“It seems to be an overwhelming sentiment that everyone is concerned about the lifts and what that may look like this year, so they wanted to have the freedom of an Alpine touring setup,” said Dirk Bockelman, the general manager at Aspen Expeditions. “A large portion of people buying gear are hoping and wanting to skin on the front sides of the mountains, and they do have an awareness and the wherewithal of the danger in the backcountry in midwinter, and they just want exercise.” ....
