A specialist printing firm has been fined a six-figure sum after an incident where an employee suffered asphyxiation after becoming entangled in a part of a press.
The employee’s high vis tabard became entangled in a rotating spindle
The incident occurred at Hereford-based Alfaplas on 29 January 2019. 
The firm specialises in flexographic printing, extrusion, converting and slitting. It makes a wide range of products including newspaper and magazine polywrap and compostable wrap, beverage multi-pack wraps, and food packaging. 
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) said the employee, who was a supervisor at Alfaplas, was trying to realign a reel of product on a printing machine while it was running at half speed.  ....

Sarpak acquired by Sphere

Household packaging specialist the Sphere Group has strengthened its position in the UK after its subsidiary Alfaplas acquired Sarpak.
Sarpak extrudes, converts and recycles PE and compostable films
The French family-owned group’s Alfaplas subsidiary in Hereford completed the acquisition of Sarpak, based in Port Talbot, South Wales, on 26 March.
Employing 53 people, Sarpak extrudes, converts and recycles PE and compostable films. It recorded a turnover of around £10.4m in 2019 and currently has a production capacity of around 7,000 tonnes.
Alfaplas, meanwhile, employs 95 people at its Hereford site, where it extrudes, prints and slits PE and compostable films as well as paper. The company’s 2019 turnover was £18.2m. ....
