Bengaluru: In an order passed on July 9, the Supreme Court of India rejected pleas by Vedanta Ltd. and the state of Goa to review a judgment that cancelled the companyâs mining leases in the state. Notably, the court also criticised both parties for their legal strategy â waiting for judges to retire before filing their review petitions.
Review petitions are usually heard by the same bench that passed the original order except when the judges have retired. ....

At public hearing, villagers oppose Amona plant plans | Goa News

PANAJI: The public hearing held on Sunday for the upgradation of blast furnace to enhance the production capacity of Vedanta’s Amona plant witnessed opposition by locals who voiced pollution concerns.
A total 309 people who had registered with the Goa State Pollution Control Board, participated in the hearing which was earlier deferred in January due to opposition.
The board received 126 written objections and 1,871 representations supporting the project, stated the minutes of the public hearing.
Among those who opposed the project included former Sakhali MLA Pratap Gauns
A villager, Vithal Naik sought to know from North Goa district collector Ajit Roy why the company officials were seated next to the panel members of the public hearing as they are not authorised to do the so as per the environment impact assessment (EIA) notification. ....

The National Green Tribunal has held that Vedanta s mining plant in Dharbandora area in Goa cannot operate without obtaining Environment Clearance (EC).
A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said the recommencement of the plant in 2019 can only be done after obtaining EC.
Accordingly, we hold that the application is maintainable and requirement of prior EC for operating the plants in question by Respondent no. 4 (Vedanta) is attracted. The Ministry of Environment and Forests and the Goa State Pollution Control Board may take further remedial action in accordance with this finding to enforce the rule of law, the bench said. ....
