Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has backed away from a previous promise, made as recently as late last year, that he will remain leader for the next 10 years. The region’s longest-serving leader now says he will remain in office as long as he wants.
Speaking at a press conference after receiving a Covid-19 vaccination on March 4, Hun Sen said: “Now I stop speaking of running as premier for 10 or 20 years. I will be prime minister until I want to stop.” ....

Four CNRP-linked Parties Will Vie for Votes in 2022, 2023 Elections

Another former Cambodia National Rescue Party member is looking to set up a political party ahead of the 2022 commune election, taking the total number of opposition-linked parties to four.
Ou Chanroth, a former CNRP lawmaker, had asked for political amnesty in 2019 and floated the idea of forming a new political entity. On Monday, the former CNRP member applied to register the Cambodia Reform Party at the Interior Ministry.
“We will set up our structure at district, provincial and national level. And for sure, we will compete in the 2022 commune elections,” he said.
The Cambodian government has scheduled the commune election for June 5 next year. The Cambodian People’s Party holds all commune chief positions in the country, barring one in Banteay Meanchey. ....

Phnom Penh Municipal Court has sentenced former opposition leader Sam Rainsy to 25 years in prison and deprived him of the right to vote or stand as a candidate in upcoming elections for plotting to overthrow the government of Prime Minister Hun Sen.
The court also sentenced two senior figures from the dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), Mu Sochua and Eng Chhay Eang, in absentia to 22 years behind bars. ....

A batch of new political parties are emerging in Cambodia, determined to end the country’s status as a one-party state with a direct challenge to Prime Minister Hun Sen and his Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) at elections due over the next two years.
Among them are the Cambodia Reform Party (CRP), the Khmer Conservative Party (KCP) and the Khmer National Love Party (KNLP), while former prime minister, Prince Norodom Ranariddh, has also announced his return to the political arena.
Ranariddh, who took three years to recover from a car accident which kept him out of the 2018 election, will lead an attempt to rejuvenate the royalist Funcinpec Party which was once a major force in domestic politics but has failed to win a seat at elections since 2008. ....
