(TNS) Eau Claire County, Wis., has selected 50 participants who will receive a year of free Internet as part of a pilot project.
The pilot focuses on unserved businesses and households in rural parts of southeastern Eau Claire County. It is operated by SpaceX Starlink and costs $85,000 total. As part of paying for the project, the local community needed to raise $30,000 and has successfully done so, according to Supervisor Don Mowry, chair of the county Broadband Committee, which met Thursday. ....

Eau Claire city, county to consider mask mandate


EAU CLAIRE — Should a statewide mandate requiring people to wear face masks in public places be struck down or expire, local officials are considering adopting a policy that would reinstate it within Eau Claire County.
A joint news release sent Wednesday morning by the Eau Claire city and county governments said their governing bodies would consider a local mandate in January that would take over if the statewide order ends.
Masks have been a proven methodology for limiting the spread of the virus; and experts are citing the need for continued vigilance as we begin the distribution of a vaccine, stated the news release issued by county Administrator Kathryn Schauf s office. ....

County billed $3,900 for outside attorney work in September, October


EAU CLAIRE — Documents show Eau Claire County has been billed nearly $4,000 by the firm that employs the county’s outside counsel during the ongoing Sheriff’s Office investigation into the county’s Department of Human Services.
Rich White’s employer, Weld Riley, billed the county for approximately the first five weeks of his work.
Two invoices provided to the Leader-Telegram through a Freedom of Information Act request show Eau Claire County was billed $3,900 by Weld Riley for work done from Sept. 22 to Oct. 28. The county retained White beginning Sept. 22.
At the Dec. 8 county Administration Committee meeting, County Administrator Kathryn Schauf said the county is paying for White’s services from its Human Resources personnel budget for contracted services. ....

Outside attorney expresses issues with DHS investigation


EAU CLAIRE — A day after Sheriff Ron Cramer provided his perspective regarding his office’s investigation into the county Department of Human Services, the outside attorney representing Eau Claire County shared with the County Board what he has gathered over the past few months.
On Monday, Cramer told the county Finance and Budget Committee that his office has been “stonewalled” and not received any DHS financial information since it initiated an investigation into DHS financial practices in May. Cramer also said the Sheriff’s Office hired the accounting firm Wipfli in October to conduct a forensic audit of DHS, which specifically searches for illegal activity. ....
