I applaud Abdi Nor Iftin’s excellent column urging Gov. Mills and her administration to welcome more refugees to Maine to help to fill the enormous void in our state’s workforce (“Maine should welcome more refugees,” May 12).
Maine’s small and large businesses continually feel the crunch of too few qualified people to fill their open positions. As a volunteer SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) mentor for the past six years with small businesses in Maine, I have seen up close how significant the problem is of filling open positions. ....

“I have both the wild and the urban,” said O’Donnell, an architect whose home in Ravenswood Gardens is a rarity: It has its own river frontage, including a paddle-up dock, on the North Branch.
Over the past 15 years, O’Donnell has transformed both the building, a classic red brick two-flat that she turned into a single-family home with a green roof and walls of rear windows, and the landscape, now a verdant sweep between the house and the water.

Discrimination existed across race, class, gender, and religion in 1950s Cherry Grove just as it did in society at large. Over the many decades since then, Cherry Grove has become more welcoming to gay people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds.
On view outdoors in New-York Historical’s rear courtyard, this exhibition explores the gay and lesbian community that flourished during the 1950s in Cherry Grove through some 70 enlarged photographs and additional ephemera from the unique holdings of the Cherry Grove Archives Collection.
