Over 40 years ago, Missouri State Parks decided that permanent preservation of large areas of undeveloped state park land as wilderness was necessary to provide opportunities for solitude and unconfined recreation, as a reserve for native species and ecological communities, and for its own intrinsic worth. These areas are intended to be free of any influences other than those of nature.
There are just 12 places in the state of Missouri that meet these criteria.The Gans Creek Wild Area in Rock Bridge Memorial State Park is one of those 12.
Six years ago, the Missouri Clean Water Commission created a program to recognize Outstanding State Resource Waters deserving of exceptional protection because of high aesthetic and scientific value, location in an undeveloped watershed and location on public lands. ....

The Columbia Planning and Zoning Commission rejected the rezoning and preliminary plat for a residential development near Rock Bridge State Park.
COLUMBIA — The Columbia Planning and Zoning Commission rejected the rezoning and preliminary plat for a residential development near Rock Bridge State Park.
The Commission voted 7-1 against the plan from land developer Rob Hill on the proposed housing design. The plan involves building 113 single family homes on about 65 acres of land near East Gans Road.  
The plan has been met with opposition from Friends of Rock Bridge Memorial State Park. 
Friends of Rock Bridge Memorial State Park s president, Kevin Roberson, said there s a clear need for development in Columbia but not at the state park. ....

Rock Bridge Park housing development seeks approval on Thursday night


COLUMBIA - Developers are seeking approval on Thursday night for a housing development at Rock Bridge State Park. 
The Planning and Zoning Commission meeting will hear from land developer Rob Hill on the proposed housing design. According to the meeting agenda, the plan requests about 65 acres of land near East Gans Road. The land would be developed into 113 single family residential lots and five common lots. 
The plan is met with opposition from Friends of Rock Bridge Memorial State Park. The group plans to speak out against the proposed development at Thursday night s meeting. 
We oppose the current development plan for Canton Estates, situated on the southeast corner of Gans and Bearfield Roads, because of its potential impact on the Gans Wild Area, and on the Gans and Clear Creeks, the public opposition comments said.  ....

Proposed housing development gains attention of environmental group


COLUMBIA – A proposed housing development has drawn attention from Friends of Rock Bridge Memorial State Park.
The Gans Wild Area is also home to Gans Creek. Friends of Rock Bridge Memorial State Park say the creek could be contaminated by storm runoff from the new development.
I m actually a part of Friends of Rock Bridge, said Rob Hill, developer of the proposed Canton Estates. The property is southeast of East Gans Road and South Bearfield Road.
Hill also developed Parkside Estates, which is on the northwest border of the state park and has homes listed in the $325,000 to $650,000 range. He said he gave very specific concessions to environmental advocates during the Parkside project. ....
