Māori view front and centre of draft law to replace RMA


Freshwater Iwi Leaders Group co-chairman Gerrard Albert, who is also chairman of Ngā Tāngata Tiaki o Whanganui, the Te Awa Tupua (Whanganui River) post-settlement governance entity, says the draft includes Te Oranga o te Taiao, a concept intended to express the intergenerational importance to Māori of environmental wellbeing.
“Te Oranga o te Taiao, which is something the ILG Freshwater has promoted, centralises a relationship around decision-making over natural resources with hapū and iwi.
“If it gets through the legislation process, it’s a reasonable way to view natural resources, to have us (meaning tiaki whenua, mana whenua, tangata whenua, iwi, hapū) intimately involved – and that’s what Te Awa Tupua does, it establishes that actually you can’t move without the hapū and iwi, the mana at place, having a say.” ....

Plans for Te Pūwaha - the project to revitalise Whanganui s port - do not include an inter island ferry, Te Pūwaha chairman Gerrard Albert says.
In 2017 Whanganui s Neville Johnson began the Midwest Ferries initiative, proposing that ferries operate between Whanganui and Motueka.
However, Albert said in a statement it was important to note a ferry was not part of current plans for the port. ....

Whanganui business Jurgens Demolition has the contract to demolish the cement silos and attached buildings at Whanganui Port, starting in the next fortnight.
The silos were owned by Q-West Boat Builders, director Myles Fothergill said.
The company will pay for the demolition, as part of its $11 million investment in the marine precinct part of the port renewal project. ....
