Michigan already has one five-star defensive prospect committed in its 2022 class in Grosse Pointe South cornerback Will Johnson, but can it land another?
Cordova (Tenn.) St. Benedict five-star defensive tackle Walter Nolen is one of the Wolverines’ top targets this cycle.
RANKING: No. 1 defensive tackle, No. 2 overall prospect nationally, according to 247Sports’ Composite system.
SIZE: 6-foot-4, 300 pounds
THE BATTLE: Nolen reportedly has 25 offers and narrowed that list to 10 schools on Feb. 12, with Michigan joining USC, Alabama, Oregon, LSU, Clemson, Florida, Ohio State, Tennessee and Auburn. He posted on social media that he plans on cutting the list to a top eight on Friday. ....

I grew up in Grosse Pointe, and graduated from GP South in 1971. Grosse Pointe has never figured very prominently in major sports at the collegiate level, and particularly at U-M; the idea that either Grosse Pointe South (or North) would boast an elite-level football player on its team was always kind of ridiculous to me.
Of course that s now changed, at least with respect to Will Johnson.
Thinking about Will playing on the same football field that I did (ineptly, on the JV team) I can t help but marvel at how things have changed. Back when I was in school in GP, Will would never have played for South because Grosse Pointe (or the five separate Pointes that comprise Grosse Pointe ) was still all-white. Blacks, Asians, Jews and Hispanics had been historically barred by the Pointes via restrictive covenants, which forbade the sale of any home to a non-white person or family. I think the covenants had been legally don ....

Since being hired as Michigan’s defensive coordinator in January, Mike Macdonald has been immersed in building and installing his scheme.
While the 33-year-old there is heading a defense for the first time in his career, there is another aspect of the job that will be an adjustment from his former position: recruiting.
Macdonald spent the previous seven years as an assistant with the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL, where player evaluations are more streamlined. Now, recruiting, the lifeblood of college football, becomes an essential component of his job description.
