A Practical Plan For A Zero-Emission Marine Ecosystem
Sometimes a revolution starts from simple beginnings – in this case, by bringing together a group of experts in shipping, energy and propulsion and giving them a blank piece of paper to create something new. This is how a practical concept for making clean shipping a reality, known as ZEEDS (Zero Emission Energy Distribution at Sea), was born.
The need for a concept like ZEEDS is clear. Shipping, carrying over 90 percent of global trade, is vital to the smooth functioning of our daily lives. But most ships still burn heavy fuel oil, which contains contaminants like sulphur and nitrogen, meaning they create a fair amount of pollution. In fact, shipping accounts for some two to three per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions. ....

Maritime technology group WÃ¤rtsilÃ¤ on Friday (18 December) said it will be jointly running a project with Grieg Edge, the innovation hub of Norwegian shipping group Grieg Star, to launch an ammonia-fuelled tanker that produces no greenhouse gas emissions by 2024
With Norwegian government support worth NOK 46.3 million NOK (USD 5.3 million) under the Pilot-E funding scheme, the partnership aims to build the world’s first green ammonia fuelled tanker.
The MS Green Ammonia will be a vital link in the new green ammonia value chain and the vessel will start sailing in 2024 to set a new benchmark for future low emission vessels. ....

Wartsila, Greig Star to build tanker to carry green ammonia

Dry bulk shipowner Grieg Star Group will build its first tanker - the world s first green ammonia-fuelled tanker to ship green ammonia - in partnership with Wartsila, backed by NOK46.3m ($5.4m) of Norwegian government’s funding scheme Pilot-E.
Wartsila Norway and Grieg Star’s innovation hub Grieg Edge are jointly running the project to launch the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions free tanker, MS Green Ammonia, in 2024.
“This year’s grants show that the Norwegian maritime industry is really at the forefront of developing emission-free solutions with great export potential. This is another great example of how we create new green industry and growth in Norway,” said Iselin Nybo, Minister of Trade and Industry, in a press release by Pilot-E. ....
