Tragedy of May 11, 1970 tornado remembered in Lubbock memorial

Longtime Lubbockites gathered together to welcome and recognize the new tornado memorial in downtown Lubbock on the 51st anniversary of the tornado that devastated Lubbock on May 11, 1970.
A dedication ceremony took place Tuesday morning near the site of the new memorial. Family members of the 26 people who died in the tornado were recognized at Tuesday s ceremony, and given flowers from the mayor and members of the Lubbock City Council.
Speakers reflected on the loss of life, those who were injured and the devastation to the community. Two tornadoes touched down on May 11,1970, and it was the large F5 tornado that had a destructive path lane of 8.5 miles and a width of 1.5 miles. The tornado covered 15 square miles, while the storm dumped three inches of rain and hail the size of grapefruits. ....

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - Inside the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center, a structure built in the aftermath of the May 11th, 1970 tornado, a ceremony was held Tuesday to dedicate the new Tornado Memorial.
âIt was a lot of work by a lot of people and weâre really proud of what came together,â Dan Williams, Chairman of the Tornado Memorial Gateway Committee said.
That committee formed when the City of Lubbock designated four acres of land at Avenue Q and Glenna Goodacre Boulevard in April of 2017 for this project, a tribute to the 26 lives lost when the F5 tornado struck the heart of the city and to serve as a way to tell the story of heartache and resilience. ....

Lubbockites will again come together again to remember those whose lives were lost or forever changed 51 years ago on Tuesday, May 11.
But, instead of gathering at a newly unveiled memorial dedicated to the 26 people killed in the 1970 tornado, inclement weather again has the city changing plans.
Instead, the ceremony set for 10 a.m. Tuesday morning will be in the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center - coincidentally also a memorial to the victims of the tornado.
There s a significant chance for thunderstorms and rain through much of Tuesday morning, with temperatures expected to hover in the lower 50s during ceremony time in Lubbock, according to the National Weather Service. ....

Lubbock to dedicate new tornado memorial on storm's 51st anniversary

Lubbock s new tornado memorial, and the first large gateway project to downtown, is finished, and a dedication ceremony will take place at the site on Tuesday.
The memorial pays tribute to the 26 victims of the May 11, 1970, tornado, while also recognizing community efforts to rebuild the city after an F5 tornado ripped through Lubbock.
The new memorial has been in the works for about three years about $4.4 million has been raised for the project. It is located at Glenna Goodacre and Avenue Q, on a four-acre site with trees and green space. The memorial features a brick plaza replicating the grid of Lubbock’s streets, and large granite walls built along the paths of the tornado. The walls are covered with quotes from people who witnessed the event. The names of the people who died in the tornado are featured at the memorial. ....
