A man who admitted harassing BBC reporter Sima Kotecha and a camera crew as they prepared for a live broadcast has been given a hospital order.
Leicester Crown Court heard Russell Rawlingson hurled abuse at the team on 10 May 2020 as they were about to go on air in the city.
Rawlingson had approached the BBC team shouting coronavirus was fake news , the court heard.
A judge said Rawlingson was clearly a risk to members of the public .
Ms Kotecha had been due to interview people at Leicester s Clock Tower following a government statement on coronavirus lockdown restrictions, but the segment was cancelled. ....

A “threatening” man has been given a hospital order after telling a camera crew he would “shoot everyone at the BBC” because they were “linked to satanic child abuse”.
Timeline
The defendant filmed himself telling Kotecha to “go back where you came from”, which prosecutors claimed was because the reporter “looked different”.
He was arrested the day after by police but when cautioned said: “I don’t understand what’s racist about it.”
Recorder William Harbage QC accepted Rawlingson’s remarks to the BBC crew were not racist, but described them as “very offensive and unpleasant”. ....

Man admits harassment of BBC journalist Sima Kotecha from Basingstoke

A MAN has admitted to harassment of BBC journalist Sima Kotecha as she was preparing to go live on air on May 10 last year.
Ms Kotecha, from Popley, Basingstoke, was due to interview people in Leicester following government lockdown restriction announcements, but was forced to abandon the segment.
MailOnline reported at the time that Rawlingson, of Glenfield Road, Leicester, denied the charge.
However, he this week pleaded guilty to a lesser non-racially aggravated version of the offence, BBC News has reported.
The prosecution did not initially accept his plea to the lesser charge, however the BBC reported that Ms Kotecha did not wish it to go to trial, and the plea to the lesser charge was therefore accepted. ....
