Fourth of July makes a comeback in Cloquet


Krew said she thought many people took public events for granted prior to the pandemic and said she was trying to make the most out of this year’s Fourth of July.
The same seemed to ring true for others, with children scrambling after candy during the parade and adults beaming in the sunlight.
“So much fun,” was the phrase used by Katie Walkowiak to describe the day.
Walkowiak and her son, Alexander Nordin, were there to watch Walkowiak’s daughter dance in the parade with Shooting Stars Dance studio. Although, Alexander, 11, seemed to be content with candy as he waited intently for the next wave of treats to hit the pavement. ....

A new thrift and consignment store called Northern Lights Community Action opened Tuesday, June 1, in Cloquet to fill a need left after the closure of the town s Goodwill in 2018 and the Salvation Army s thrift store in 2020.
We knew that there was no place for people to come in and get things at a low cost, said building owner Heather Wright. We opened this truly as a nonprofit to just help the community. ....

Local restaurants reopen for dine-in service


Restaurants around Carlton County and the state reopened to indoor, dine-in service after a break of more than six weeks due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has ravaged the nation. The industry endured a more than two-month shutdown earlier in the year as state officials tried to get a grip on the spread of the coronavirus.
By noon, approximately eight tables in the restaurant were full. Under Gov. Tim Walz’s relaxed restrictions, restaurants are limited to 50% capacity.
Still, 50% capacity is barely enough to “pay the bills” according to owner Erika Aranda. Pedro’s started a delivery service during the pause and Aranda estimated that operating at half its capacity is about equal to what they were making on the delivery service. ....
