Islamabad : Prime Minister’s Task Force on Science and Technology Chairman Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman has said that national education emergency is need of the hour.
Addressing a webinar titled ‘Budget 2021-22: Needs & Expectations of Higher Education Sector’ organised by Association of Private Sector Universities Pakistan (APSUP), Superior University, Inter University Consortium for Promotion of Social Sciences Pakistan (IUCPSS), University of Lahore, Government College University Lahore, and FPCCI Central CSR Committee on Higher Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Dr. Atta recommended increase in allocation to education by federal and provincial governments by 0.5% of GDP annually till it reaches 5.0% of GDP over next 5 years. ....

ISLAMABAD: Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman, Chairman Prime Minister’s Task Force on Science and Technology, has stated that national education emergency is need of the hour and recommended an increase in allocation to education by federal and provincial governments by 0.5% of GDP annually till it reaches 5.0% of GDP over next 5 years.
He was addressing a webinar on the topic of “Budget 2021-22: Needs & Expectations of Higher Education Sector” organized by the Association of Private Sector Universities Pakistan (APSUP), Superior University, Inter-University Consortium for Promotion of Social Sciences Pakistan (IUCPSS), University of Lahore, Government College University Lahore, and FPCCI Central CSR Committee on Higher Education, Science and Technology here on Thursday. ....

The past year and a half has been full of loss and heartbreak for so many, across the world. Every life lost, especially the ones taken far before their time, deserves to be remembered and celebrated. As we enter the sixteenth year without our beloved father, Anwar Saleem Ahmad, we once again turn to the pages of the newspaper in which he wrote a long-running article to remember his life and honor his memory.
Our father lived an unconventional and challenging life. After losing his mother at the age of two, he was raised by his elder sisters, two invincible women who undoubtedly prepared him for the many trials life would throw at him. He graduated at the top of his class in the first batch of students to receive a Masters in International Relations from Quaid-e-Azam University, and went on to top the CSS examination and join the DMG. WHEN he struggled from atop his container to become prime minister, Imran Khan promised that all who handle public funds would be held accountable. Influential people included, there would be no exceptions. Seen as a blow against widespread corruption, this was broadly welcomed. But new directives from the Prime Minister’s Office have explicitly excused some from normal procedures of accountability.
Most recently the HEC chairman, Dr Tariq Banuri, was shown the door after he questioned the performance exemption given to three scientific institutions associated with Dr Atta-ur-Rahman, currently an adviser to the government and a former HEC chairman. In doing so, Banuri crossed a red line. No charge sheet was issued but a hurried meeting of the cabinet led to his sacking. To avoid a legal challenge, a presidential ordinance reduced the HEC chairman’s tenure from four to two years. ....
