TRADE union federation Cosatu on Wednesday slammed the government and economists for pushing for a freeze of public servants’ salaries.
Commemorating International Nurses Day, the country’s biggest federation described the government’s delay in improving its 0% offer to its employees as insulting.
”The failure by the government to pay nurses and other public servants their wage increases last year and the intransigent attitude they have adopted towards the current public service wage negotiations is regrettable and insulting, especially for the nurses that serve as front-line workers waging a war against a deadly disease,” Cosatu said in a statement. ....

Cape Town - The case against Mxoleleni Sikhala, 32, accused of murdering two Kraaifontein police officers, has been postponed to August 4.
Sikhala, who faces two counts of murder, one of attempted murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances, appeared at the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court yesterday. He accused of killing two police officers, Mnakwazo Mdoko, 46, and Mninawa Breakfast, 28, two months ago.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said the case has been postponed for further investigation.
The two officers, Mdoko and Breakfast, were allegedly ambushed by a group of suspects while on patrol duties in Phumla street, Bloekombos, where they came under fire. The officers were declared dead at the scene and their official firearms were stolen. ....

Cape Town - The 32 year-old suspect linked to the killing of two police officers in Kraaifontein is expected to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s court this morning.
Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale said the Hawks’ National Priority Violent Crimes Team, together with members of Kraaifontein police, crime intelligence and K9 have, in an intelligence driven operation, arrested the suspect in Mandela Park, Khayelitsha.

Johannesburg - Police unions have expressed concern over “senseless” police killings after a series of murders were reported.
In the past 10 days, six police officers have been killed, which has led to the police ministry calling for communities to intensify their fight against crime.
In the Western Cape, two police officers suffered gunshot wounds to their heads while on routine crime-prevention duties in the early hours of Monday morning.
Last week, in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, two police officers, Sergeants Makhosazane Mdlangathi and Mfikelwa Mtolo, died in a hail of bullets after being ambushed by gunmen. ....
