Crews demolish remains of church destroyed by fire in Tacony WPVI Replay Video A historic church in Philadelphia s Tacony section went up in flames on Sunday afternoon. The fire broke out around 5:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Leo the Great Roman Catholic Church near Unruh Ave and Keystone Street. Heavy smoke billowed into the sky as flames tore through the vacant property that was built in 1884. Suzanne McErlain Vrana captured video of the flames shooting through the church s roof as she was traveling south on I-95. The blaze reached two alarms before it was brought under control just after 7 p.m. ....
Firefighters found smoke spilling from the first floor of the four-story, 33-unit building. The building was searched and evacuated. No injuries were reported. Fire crews were forced to evacuate the building after smelling a natural gas odor. PECO was called to the scene to address an exposed gas line near the fire. It happened around 6:50 p.m. Monday. According to authorities, the crash occurred when two cars heading westbound towards Philadelphia appeared to be speeding. One car clipped the other sending it into the eastbound lane, where it struck a Honda Civic head-on. Two other vehicles were also hit. The driver of the Civic, Gerardo Francisco Perez Martinez, 35, of Camden, New Jersey, was pronounced dead at the scene. Five others were taken to the hospital with various injuries, none of which appear to be life-threatening. The bridge reopened to traffic around 2:40 a.m. Tuesday.
