Record travel predicted for holiday, but busy Keys might not even notice


The American Automobile Association released a report last week forecasting the July 4th weekend to be one of the busiest in history as America emerges from COVID-19 and people look to travel again. But business leaders in the Florida Keys said the island chain is already so busy with tourists that locals might not even feel much of a difference.
The Keys’ busy season in years past has ended when hotter summer months descend on the islands. But in 2021, a combination of tourists looking for tropical and domestic travel destinations and a surging influx of new home buyers has caused a prolonged peak season with unusually high lodging prices and heavy traffic on U.S. 1. ....

Keys hurricane conference set for May 27


National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham will be the keynote presenter at the annual Hurricane Preparedness Workshop for the Florida Keys Tourism Industry set to begin at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 27.
Graham will focus on enhanced forecast products for the official 2021 Atlantic Basin hurricane season that begins June 1 and continues through Nov. 30. He’ll also concentrate on the season’s outlook and the importance of using trusted information sources in the three-hour virtual event.
“The 2020 hurricane season was the most active on record, with 30 named storms including 14 hurricanes, seven of which were major hurricanes,” Graham noted. “Eleven storms made landfall along the U.S. coastline, four of which came ashore in Louisiana.” ....
